the Free Grant Money site

Federal Reserve NoteImage via Wikipedia It would be nice to have a pile of these. Right?

A New Multi-layered Grants Site

I saw this today at the Digg site (http://www.digg.com). The site I found is a great resource, because it is free and has been around since 2002. It is run by Charles Kassotis, who lives in Costa Rica.

Here it is:
The Free Grant Money site.

Here are some things on the site you may like:

1. The Free Grant Money blog - this blog is associated with the site, and helps explain about loans, grants, and business grants.

2. The Government Grant Links page - this page includes links like The Foundation Center and the Foundation Center Finder page.

3. The NIH Institute of Health grant opportunities, which features information on OSHA grants, award programs, and special announcements from the NIH.

This is a multi-layered site with many opportunities for learning, grants, and scholarships from all kinds of government programs.

You can connect with the site author on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/charles_kasso.

Don't get scammed while looking for a scholarship

Basic creditcard / debitcard / smartcard graph...Image via Wikipedia
You CAN protect yourself from scholarship scams.

It's a common mistake to make. You think that the scholarship site is legit. You may be offered a scholarship for a "small fee", or someone offers to help you find a scholarship "just for you." (And bills you afterwards...)

On-the-level scholarship sites or organizations do NOT charge a fee to find you a scholarship, and they do not fill your forms out for you. And if you think a "non-profit" organization sounds a little too good to be true, it just might be.

Articles I found (below) warn NOT to give out your personal information like credit card numbers or numbers to "scholarship" companies. Scholarships.com warns that a scholarship provider does not need this information.

Do your homework. Are you sceptical? Do you have a feeling that perhaps the offer you got is not legitimate? You can contact the Federal Trade Commission to find out if you are involved in any kind of a scholarship scam. Their web address is http://www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams.

Scholarship Stories from Real People

Tweet about this blog posting:

Carnegie Mellon UniversityImage via WikipediaCarnegie-Mellon University

Here are some stories by real people who have won scholarships.
Success stories from Scholarships.com - I enjoyed reading this article because I like to read about real people and how they got their scholarships. Each winner lists his or her scholarships he or she has won, and how he or she did it.
A Dream Come True: Kaitlin Miciunas at Carnegie-Mellon tells about how she won the Gindroz Prize for Travel/Study.
One of the Best Things that Ever Happened to Me: ThinkandFeel posts anonymously about how it felt to get a Fulbright Scholarship for graduate study.
Students talk about their scholarships they won from Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island.
Posting actual scholarship stories makes me realize that people DO get scholarships and benefit from them. If you want to get a scholarship, there are some great, free resources you can use.
Some are listed here:
The Nontrads Scholarship page oneand The Nontrads Scholarship page two.
Good luck on getting a scholarship! Even though the playing field may be tougher than usual considering the current economy, I believe that actually doing the work for a scholarship is worth it. There is always a chance of a scholarship changing your life.

Can you win an Ivy League scholarship?

Half-time activities, the Yale-Harvard game, 2001Image via Wikipedia
Here are a few ideas for people who would like to go to an Ivy League School...
Yes, you can win scholarships to Ivy League Schools. People do every year.
How do they do it? Some get in with terrific test scores and exemplary grades. Some are legacy students with plenty of tuition money.

But if you are not in those categories, you can still try to get in to the school of your choice, which just might be one of the Ivy League schools, which are among the very best in the nation.
Many of these prestigious schools have in-house scholarships. Plus, you can apply for other scholarship money as well.

This video has some hints on how to win a scholarship to an Ivy League school. I personally think you don't have to have straight A's as much as you need to stand out.  But remember, getting in is hard. You DO have a chance, though, so I would say to try and see if you get in, then see what kind of scholarship money you get. If you do not get in to an Ivy League school, at least you will have tried, if this is something that you want.

Here is a list of Ivy League Schools: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_League. Some of the most famous in this list are Harvard and Princeton. These are very selective schools, and not everyone who wants to go there is able to.
But there is always a chance! And if you can't get in to the "regular" school, you can sometimes enroll in their online school.

Here are some websites to help you apply to these schools and/or get a scholarship from them or another source.

The Native American Scholarship Fund - Catching the Dream - there is much good advice here, including how to get multiple scholarships.

College Confidential - Ask the Dean - what are Ivy League schools looking for? And what kind of students get scholarships to one?

Good luck!

Scholarships.com is worth a try!

Try it - - - you might like it!

Hi, all!

I went to Scholarships.com today and found a good article there. It is called Non-Academic College Scholarships - Scholarships Aren't Just for "A Students" Anymore.

I was intrigued by the title. Then I read the rest. I liked the good information I found there. I found out that the site awards its own scholarships. Here is one of them (from the site):

"...the Scholarships.com Resolve To Evolve Scholarship doesn’t have any GPA, SAT or ACT requirements and you could win up to $3,000 with your scholarship essay

That sounds worth looking into, I think. I used to think that Scholarships.com must have an easy road to getting web traffic, just because of their name - - that they probably didn't need to do much real work on the site. But I was wrong. There are some good articles here, PLUS a chance to win their scholarships and others.

The site meets my criteria too - it is totally free.

So, give it a try. Here is the web address: http://www.scholarships.com.

And here is the address of the article again: Non-Academic College Scholarships. After you register there, let me know how it goes - for instance, is it easy to sign up? What kind of email do you receive after that? I would love to know and let my readers know more about the site. But it definitely looks worth a try.

Later!
