The Dr. Torres Database - good for a close look. It has many different categories.

How to read and navigate the Torres/Fatomei database.

On the surface, the Dr. Torres/Fatomei database doesn't seem to have a lot to it. BUT it has been online for a long time, and has some very useful links in it that other websites don't have.

The title when you get to the site, High School Seniors: College Scholarships, Student Financial Aid, describes the page well. You need to scroll down past the ads then, to see the quality links below them.

For me, since I am not a high school senior, the links at the right side of the site are much more interesting. Some of these include African Americans, Minorities, Native Americans, Women, Arts and Humanities, College and Graduate School, Medical School, and Nationally Coveted, just to name a few.

Just click on these categories to see what is listed there. Here is a screen shot of the site to help you see the different areas.

The right side links are easy to see, and have grey shading.

You can also see the Google ads there. When you scroll down past them, you will see K-12, College Scholarships, etc. Below this are the actual Dr. Torres links.

This site is a treasure trove of many kinds of scholarships, grants, awards, fellowships, and internships. I like the way everything is available for you to see and how it is classified. It is very up-front and easy to read too.

Let me know what you find by leaving a comment.

Scholarship and Grant Sites for U.S. Veterans 2012

Memorial Day made me think about listing

...some good sites for U.S. veterans to find scholarships and grants with.

Along with regular scholarships and grants, veterans qualify for other programs. Here are some sites to help research scholarships for veterans:

The FinAid Veterans Page

The G.I. Bill website

The U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs - also check out the new Joint VA/DOL Program article here.

Military.com: Busting the Myths about Scholarships

The American Legion Scholarships Page

The Johnson County Community College Page - Veteran/Military-related Grants and Scholarships

Scholarships.com's Veterans/Official Scholarships Bog/Scholarship Search, Find Scholarships and Grants Blog

Another less well-known program helps veterans find programs and help. Here is that website:
The Upward Bound site.

There are also Upward Bound programs that are in many different areas of the country. Find your State program at the drop-down menu right under the picture of the soldier at the site.

I hope these sites are helpful, and I hope your Memorial Day was a good one.

Treat looking for scholarships like a job... get organized!

How to be organized in your scholarship and grant search.

I heard some of this advice on a few different websites in the past, and I wanted to share what these people said.

In order to be successful in getting scholarships, some students and experts say that you should send a lot of scholarship applications out. I would think that in today's day and age, more people than ever would be trying for the few scholarships that are out there.

Because of that, if you fill out a LOT of scholarships (and follow up with them if needed), then you have a better chance of getting one.

Keep a box or filing cabinet and put the dates you applied for different scholarships there. You will be able to tell easier when one is due (with a note on the folder) and also you will be able to check with the scholarship people and find out who won each scholarship.

Also, as you may know, some scholarships require that you re-apply each year, and some do not. Dating your search folder can help with this too. The Sallie Mae page (also listed below) also says that having a scheduler for important loan or scholarship dates can also be a big help.

Organizing your financial aid documents is also very important and can save important time, says the Scholarships.com site (below). They also mention which documents you need for many searches.

Julie Bestry, a professional organizer, shares her secrets in her page, Organizing your College Search and Application Process that can be directly applied to scholarship organization.

Being well-organized can help you a lot in your search.

A lucky Scholarship Find Page of the Day

Hello, scholarship seekers. I hope you are having fun looking up scholarships, and finding funding for school.

I lucked out today and found a great resource. It is a page from the U.S. News and World Report, a respected publication on and offline.

This page lists articles and information just for scholarship seekers.

Here are some of the subjects these well-written and researched articles are about: 5 reasons Scholarships are essential, News and help from the Scholarship Coach, scholarship information for international students, why some Harvard students pay $15,000 a year, financial aid on Facebook, de-stressing from the debt of college loans, and more.

Here is that link: College Scholarships | US News and World Report.

I hope you really like these articles and information on scholarships.

What is one of YOUR favorite scholarship sites? List it as a comment here, or just say hi.

Scholarship search information from New Hampshire

Hello, scholarship searchers.

Do you live in New Hampshire? They have a downloadable form with college information on it that's really interesting.

It is called the NHHEAF: Local College Counselors and Financial Aid Gurus. This form explains how to get guidance for school, and how to obtain scholarships too.

Here is that link: http://www.nhes.nh.gov/elmi/career/documents/nhheaf.pdf. This form will download to your computer, and open with a PDF reader, which you probably have on your computer. If you don't, you can get one here:

Download a PDF Reader.

I plan to put this information on the New Hampshire Nontraditional Student page soon. That page is here:

http://www.nontradstudents.com/newhampshire.html

What is neat about the New Hampshire site is that there are some links there that can help students in other states too.

I am sharing this on my iPad so I had to go back and fix these links later.

Thanks.

All for now,
Betsyanne
