WKU offers Bonner Scholarship Program

Great info! I received this information today via an email from the local ALIVE group.

The ALIVE group helps people in the community help others by volunteering and learning about community needs. They are connected to this program, whose full name is the Corella & Bertram F. Bonner Foundation.

There are 80 different schools in the Bonner Scholarship network. Western Kentucky University is one of them.

The Bonner Scholarship Program has its own web page at Western. This sounds like a great opportunity.

Students get help with their schooling, PLUS the students have a chance to give back with community service. I like this!

Here is a list of colleges who are part of the Bonner Network. Is your school listed there?

Funding for International Students coming to the U.S. to study

Hi, everyone! I hope you are finding funding for your educational journey.

I got a question today online about sources for overseas students coming to the US to study.

The Statue of Liberty - NPS (CC)  photo on Wikimedia Commons

I am posting part of my answer here, and adding more about it too.

Are you serious about coming the US to study? Then I would suggest looking into scholarships and grants right away. It could make all the difference for you.

First, I would check out the school(s) you are interested in. Chances are they may have their own funds, scholarships, and grants you can apply for. Get in touch with Admissions to find out.

Secondly, look for QUALITY sites online to find out about even more programs.

For US Resources for out-of-country students, try searching for overseas scholarships on my Scholarships and Grants blog here:

Use the Search function to the right there.

US State Department resources listed with sites like Scholarships.com or FastWeb, or maybe the Gold Standard scholarships are good ideas, as well as the great Fulbright Scholarships.

There are also some listed on this page: http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/prestigious.phtml. Scroll down to see these.

You can also google "US educational opportunities for foreign students" or "US Scholarships for International Students" and see what comes up. I think you may be pleasantly surprised at the variety and kind of international student scholarships available today.

Good luck finding sources, and I hope these are helpful hints too.

Veterans - - You can find help by accessing these resources.

Veteran's Resources for School, Training, and more.
Photo by U.S. Dept. of Education - Veterans Tribute Career Technical Academy

Are you a veteran going back to school? Or maybe you know someone who is a veteran and would like to go back to school?

At WKU, there is a special office just for Veterans, the Veterans Affairs office. They help with all forms and find out what benefits each veterans have.

Here are their helpful links too:
http://www.wku.edu/veteran/valinks.php

They include the Dept. for Veterans Affairs, Vocational Rehab site, a link to the Kentucky Troops to Teachers program site, AND the WKU Upward Bound page.

These programs are available across the country. They are well worth looking into.

Veterans, just give your local college or school a call and let them guide you to local Veteran's resources for scholarships, grants, and lots more.

Good luck, veterans!

Winning a scholarship - some tips from a great Fastweb article.

Another great article from Fastweb: 12 Tips on Winning a Scholarship.

I like these tips. My favorites are: #6: Don't miss deadlines. It sounds simple, but you may have a perfect essay or application, and not even be considered, just because you are late for the deadline. Your application may wind up in the circular file, also known as the wastebasket.

#9: Personalize your essay and be passionate. Yes! This is a great suggestion too. Being passionate and excited about what you are writing about will show the committee that you have your own voice, and will set you above other applicants.

Also, an interesting application will be a welcome addition to the many these people have probably already read (boring ones!).

I personally would add another suggestion: Keep on keeping on - - keep on filling out applications, keep on looking for more scholarships to apply to, and keep yourself motivated.

There are students out there who have paid for their whole college experience by applying for scholarships and grants.

Here is that link again:

Good luck!

Do I want a scholarship? I would love to GIVE one...

My Scholarship Dreams!
Photo from Villás Galéria és Aukciósház on Wikimedia Commons.

I would love to be able to offer my OWN scholarship to people maybe going back to school or needing some support with that. But until I win the lottery I can't. Darn.

But I do have a Nontraditional Student site, blog, and Yahoo group, and help older students who may be thinking of going back to school, or are already in school.

So this site (the Find Scholarships and Grants blog) helps them, too.

What kind of scholarship would I pick to give away?

I guess either an Art or English scholarship would appeal to me personally. I know that every little bit of money helps, so maybe I will work on getting a grant to do this someday. It is worth looking into!

I could look at people's writing or art portfolios, and select someone with both talent and stick-to-itive-ness.

But for the time being, I write about many different kinds of scholarships here. I hope these links are helpful.

I think people probably have applied with the links here. But so far, I have not applied for any.

Why not?  I guess I think that if I DO win one, then I will need to come up with the REST of the money, then go back to school right away. And I am not sure NOW is the time.

Besides, I can learn a lot just doing my writing (in blogs, for instance) or finishing up some ebooks, AND making some art. There is a lot available on the internet to help, plus in books from the library or from my favorite bookstore in Nashville, McKay's Books.

Are you also thinking of applying for a scholarship? Just search for what kind you are looking for on the pages below OR in this blog. And good luck!
