The new Karsh Scholarship Program at Duke U. helps international students

This program sounds great.
Duke University Residential Quadrangle by Matt Phillips on Flickr.

Students from all around the world are now being helped to attend college at prestigious Duke University through the new Karsh International Scholarship program.

The awards include financial aid to attend college, plus other needed support which helps students adapt to the culture here. The Scholarship program helps students get internships in the summertime too.

What a great idea. And the cultural benefits go both ways.

You can learn more about this new scholarship at this article:

Santa's Top Ten Scholarship Sites for 2011 - make that the Betsyanne Top Ten

Well, make that Betsyanne's Top Ten for 2011.

But wouldn't it be great if Santa Claus carried Scholarships and Grants to people as well as gifts? It WOULD be a terrific gift to get a scholarship this year, wouldn't it?

There are many scholarships listed on this blog you are reading. But the sites below are even better. Many of them have built-in databases, and can email you when a scholarship matches your criteria.

These are handy (and free) sites that you can go to anytime to register or just search for scholarships or grants you are interested in. #2 also has lists of internships. Many of the sites also include data for graduate students and provide articles and help for your scholarship search.

Here are my NEW Top 10 Scholarship and Scholarship Advice Sites for 2011:

1. The Fastweb site. This site is rated #1 on more than one website and blog.
2. The Fatomei/Dr. Torres pages. These pages have links to unusual and hard-to-find scholarships, grants, and much more.
3. (of course!) The Official U.S. FAFSA page. This is the FREE and original page. You can find scholarships and grants here by filling out your information.
4. (mine) The Nontraditional Student Scholarship pages one and two. These and other sites are listed here.
5. The CollegeNet Mach 25 site. This is another great database.
6. FastAid Free Scholarship Search. Another good site.
7. The Fresch Info. site. This site has articles, links, and advice.
8. Links at the Scholarship Page. You will have to check these links out. Some are credit card sites or only for online students.
9. The Know How to Go website - check here with questions, links to other state sites, and learn how to go to college.
10. College-Scholarships.com - this site has many pages for different careers and state scholarships. The entry page here also has MANY more sites with scholarship links too.

Well, that's it. I hope that Santa is good to everyone who reads this blog this year.

And please list YOUR favorite scholarship info. sites so I can add them next time I have a list to share. Or share your comment below. Your name is your blog or site link there.

Thanks! And have a GREAT holiday.

The IDEX Fellowship Program in India - a great opportunity.

A new opportunity in India for recent graduates!

And also a terrific opportunity, the Fellowship Program for IDEX in India helps people who want to learn more about helping the poor with development of programs in social enterprise. This opportunity is via Tina. I found out about this on Facebook.

Recent cohorts include people from these U.S. colleges: Beloit, Wesleyan, Dartmouth, the University of Georgia, and lots more. Other fellows come from all over.

Here is the original message:

"Anyone interested in a year-long paid internship in social entrepreneurship in India? Contact Jennifer Baird (daughter of Pat Kyle, former WIS librarian, at jbaird@graymatterscapital.com.) It's the IDEX fellowship: http://www.idexfellows.com/"

Here is part of the description from the site:

Fellowship Program

"Filling the Talent Gap
IDEX Fellowship is designed to attract, develop and retain promising young professionals who will help lead the development of enterprises that serve the poor while creating a positive social impact. This talent pool is being cultivated in order to build the capacity of the social sector and the diverse enterprises, for-profit, nonprofit and quasi-public organizations that encompass it."

Sound interesting? You can find out a lot more from the site. Good luck!

New group of Rhodes Scholars includes Ronan Farrow

The Rhodes Scholarships reward some of the best scholars in the world.
Cecil Rhodes in Capetown.
There are a group of 32 finalists this year for the Rhodes Scholarship. These winners will be able to study for 2-3 years at Oxford University in England. Wow. The most famous person who won was Ronan Farrow, Mia Farrow and Woody Allen's son.

I can't think of an serious student who would not want this scholarship. It opens up so many doors for each winner. Congratulations to all the new winners!

Cecil Rhodes wrote out some qualifications that winners of this scholarship should have. Here is the quote, from the historical biography page at the age-of-the-sage website listed below.

<The winner of the Rhodes scholarship should have: >

"'literary and scholastic attainments; his fondness of, and success in, manly outdoor sports; his qualities of manhood, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for the protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship, and his exhibition during his school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and take an interest in his schoolmates'."

Do you think you would qualify for this scholarship? By all means, apply for next year's Rhodes Scholarships.

There were 830 applicants this year. The articles below explain more about this prestigious honor.

Beautiful music scholarships for African-Americans and Latinos. more

Beautiful Music Scholarships for musical people...

Do you love music? Are you African-American or Latino? Here on the ASCAP page, there are scholarships for all ages and ethnicities.  Most of the scholarships on this page are for younger students, but a few are also available for older students.

Two of these are: (from the site)

"THE ASCAP FOUNDATION IRVING BURGIE SCHOLARSHIP
The ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship was established to support an aspiring African-American songwriter from New York City. This annual scholarship is awarded alternately between the Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California. It is funded by a gift from ASCAP member, performer, folklorist and community activist, Irving Burgie in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his song 'Day-O.'"

and

"THE ASCAP FOUNDATION RUDY PEREZ SONGWRITING SCHOLARSHIP
Rudy Perez, recipient of two consecutive El Premio ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Awards and a leading producer of Latin Music, has established The ASCAP Foundation Rudy Perez Songwriting Scholarship. This scholarship is presented annually to an aspiring Latino songwriter who demonstrates potential to produce creative and original work and also demonstrates financial need."

And here are more scholarship links:

Music scholarship links from Scholarships.com
Music College Scholarships from the OEDb page.
Menc.org's Scholarship Resources for Music Students/College

Music scholarships are often available by audition at your local college or university with a music program too. Inquire to find out more.

I hope these are helpful to an aspiring songwriter or music student.

Winning a scholarship - try for a LARGE one!

Question: if you are going to search for a scholarship, why not try for a big one?
Here are a few articles and pages about winning a LARGE scholarship.

#1: (From Scholarships.com) - Largest Dollar Amount Scholarships - this page has three scholarships listed, one for $10,000, which is for a Create a Greeting Card Scholarship.

#2: One large scholarship is for Interior Design Students - learn how Angela Lauer won this $30,000 scholarship. This article is at the University of Texas at Austin's site.

#3. The Ruth Lilly Poetry Scholarship has been split into more than one scholarship. You can apply through Poetry Magazine. Find out more here at the Poetry Foundation site: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/prizes_fellowship.

#4. The Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships page at the FinAid site lists some big scholarships like Apple Scholars ($2,000), the Buick Achievers Scholarship (25,000), the Collegiate Inventors Competition (25,000 Grand Prize), Davidson Fellows ($50,000), and more. Check it out here: Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships.

There are more out there - send me the links you find! And sign up or search on some sites like FinAid, FreschFastAid, the Career OneStop Scholarship Search, FastWeb, BrokeScholar to find even more great (and big) links.

Good luck on your scholarship search!

Things to do in-between your scholarship applications

I have to admit. I have good intentions, but still have not used this blog to fill out my OWN scholarships and blogs and register on all the sites I need to register on.

I did plan it that way, and as a helpful addition to information for nontraditional students, but I'm you know how things can morph sometimes.

So... I am doing things in-between applications. Here are just a few you might like too.

#1. Organize your house. I like the FlyLady site for this. http://www.flylady.net/

#2. Write a novel in the month of November. Just go to the NaNoWriMo site to sign up.  http://www.nanowrimo.org/

#3. Start a blog about your educational grant and scholarship search. Then send me the link. I'll be happy to link to it. I use Blogger, but Wordpress is good too, among others.

All for now - so what neat things can YOU suggest in-between scholarship applications?

Let me know with a comment.

The FAFSA: when should you apply for next year?

The Explorer art is from the Microsoft Clipart Pages.

Exploring the FAFSA...
You can check for your state's FAFSA Deadlines at this page:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm

This is the official page to check. I looked up Kentucky's deadlines today. It listed these deadlines for the 2011-2012 school year: The Federal deadline is June 30, 2012. Corrections must be made by September 15, 2012.

(from the website)

College Deadline
Each college may have a different deadline. Check with the college(s) you are interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about their definition of an application deadline - whether it is the date they receive your FAFSA, or the date your FAFSA is processed."

So, if you are wanting to attend next year, and plan ahead, I'm pretty sure the due dates will be similar. AND the budget crisis being what it is, I would apply right on January 1st of next year. That is the first day to apply. As the FinAid site explains,

"FAFSA Deadlines

Financial aid applications, such as the FAFSA, should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1, but no sooner. You cannot submit the form before January 1, because the need analysis process uses your financial information from the prior tax year when calculating eligibility for the upcoming award year"

You can contact FAFSA directly at this link:
They have live help here every day but Sunday. They also have an email address at this site.

You can also find out more about Federal Student Aid at this page:

Here is something new at the site. It's called the FAFSA4caster. You can see what your estimated loan amounts may be and what you qualify for ahead of time.
Here is the page for that:
Let me know how this works if you try it!

Cynthia Good's College and Career Planning Page - worth a look

A college links page with possibilities.

At least one link listed here on the college-scholarships.com site is one I have never seen even one time before. It is called the Cynthia Good's College and Career Planning Site.

This site has moved since it was first found here, but I found its new location. Here it is:
Cynthia Good's College and Career Planning.

This page has a multitude of helpful sites listed PLUS a big Financial Aid section that includes scholarships.

Among the other pages listed are these sites you may not have been to yet:

Campus Tours - tour many campuses online for free
GoCollege - lots of free information is here, including a short section on college survival.
Talbot's Student Guide - This lists many schools and has an easy-to-use map to zero in on what state you might be interested in. I do notice that the laptop contest puts you on a mailing list and asks for your year of graduation, so if you don't want that, don't enter.

Check out the other sites listed here:
http://www.college-scholarships.com/100college.htm
(scroll down to see the list)

Until next time!

Seven redone NT State Pages with Scholarships added

I have been redoing my Nontraditional Student State Pages one at a time at the Betsyanne Nontraditional Student website.

I am adding scholarship links to them, too. I think this goes well with each State page because in order to go back to school as a nontraditional student (or any age student), people sometimes need to find funds and don't want to put everything on a loan.

Here are the latest redone pages that include scholarship links.

I hope to have every state and its scholarships done by next year - or maybe this one!

Here are the State pages with Scholarship links added:
Alabama
Texas
Arkansas
Ohio
Kentucky
Colorado
and Maryland.

Make sure to refresh each page when you visit.

Comment below and let me know which page(s) you want me to improve next.

Thanks

How to get a scholarship - by other people and by me, plus Judge Josh Barsch

Hi, scholarship seekers.

There seem to be a million pages online telling you HOW to get a scholarship. I have read a lot of these. Some are really great. Some are not so great.

Most how-to-get-a-scholarship pages online usually just tell you what every person who has a little common sense knows, like:

1. Apply. (Truly more than a no-brainer...)

2. Take your time with each application and carve out time to do many of them. (i.e., be thoughtful and use spell checker or a friend to go over your application.)

3. Go to these sites... (recommended sites follow...) (and sometimes these are very self-serving... or do not include regular schools, only ones that have paid a fee, or only online ones.)

4. Watch your spelling and punctuation. (Really this is #2)

5. Get some books on the subject and read them. (Which I guess could be helpful...)

6. Don't give up. (a la Winston Churchill)

7. Stay motivated. (See #6 which this is really a repeat of)

8. Etc. etc. etc... (mostly stuff you already know).

I have run across some pages like this. Don't waste your time reading any scholarship type article that does not have some links at the bottom.

Better yet, it is good if that site can show some research or even footnotes. There is nothing wrong with an inspirational or imaginative posting, but if the whole site is like that, move on with your internet searching.

To wind up, anyone can pontificate about what you need to do. What scholarship seekers REALLY need is a list of GREAT and up to date resources, blog sites, and information so they can learn for themselves and get cracking at applying or learning where to apply for scholarships.

I have found one really good site lately I want to share with you now. It is a blog that I signed up for. It is called "Judge Josh" Barsch. He has his own scholarship he gives out. He also writes intelligent and interesting articles.

Here is his contact information (from his blog).

"Judge Josh" Barsch

The full-ride scholarship: does it really exist?

The easy answer is yes... like "yes, Virginia, it does exist..." but of course, whenever there is a GREAT scholarship, there are also going to be a great number of applicants. But this does NOT mean that you should not try to get one.

An article on the FastWeb site by Kathryn Knight gives 9 places to look for full-ride scholarships. They can be found at the Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC, Project Working Mom, Microsoft University, the Gates Foundation, as a SMART scholarship from the defense department, and at a college or university near you. You can read this article here.

Something you probably already know is that you will never get any kind of scholarship unless you apply for it. The more you apply for, the better chance you have of getting one or more of them.

I know that scholarships ARE out there, just like UFO's may also be out there.

It's up to us to believe in ourselves or make that appointment with the local school near us.

You (and I!) can make that time to do some research about scholarships and grants. We can find out where to send our applications and letters.

Grants and Scholarships for Interior Design
Here are a few quality links and sites for people who would like to go to school and learn about interior design. They are sites to explore. I tried to skip all the for-profit sites that only list their own courses or lesser quality sites.

I notice that there are a lot of scholarships offered at many schools for this area of study. This is a short page of all that is available.
