Internships and summer jobs - have you applied for one?

About Internships... (and summer jobs)

I didn't know much about internships until I was back in school. I was taking a journalism class, and found out about some great internships that were offered through the Journalism Department at WKU.

For those who are not in the know, Internships are largely unpaid opportunities to work in business or a nonprofit and get good recommendations, job experience, and references.

Often, students will intern in the summertime and go to school during the regular school year.

An internship is NOT a scholarship or a grant, but can be just as competitive. It is an opportunity to find out more about a subject, and to make contacts too.

How to get one? Simply ask your school departments OR teachers about them. You can also look up internships from a book or online.

Following are just a few helpful pages and links about internships.

Learning a lot. From the Microsoft Clipart pages.

The Fatomei Internship page
InternZoo - has ads for intern jobs.
The White House internship (apply in May)
NPR Internships
Mercy Corps internship in International Development (also learning about International relief and development).
Monster College List of Internships
New England Aquarium Internships
The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center internships
Internship opportunities by AAAnet (American Anthropological Assn.)
The Michigan University State Libraries list of internships - this site warns you against paying for information or hiring a firm to place you. You can do this all for free yourself.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Internship (The application for 2012-13 is available in the Fall of 2011.)
Internships at the Smithsonian (applications are now online)
The CoolWorks site: It looks like employers pay for their ads, you as a job seeker, do not. There are jobs here at nonprofits that may qualify as an internship. Check it out.
