Are there scholarships for Science Fiction fans?

Take me to your party!
Hello, all!

I just got back from ConCave, a fun science fiction convention held in Bowling Green, Kentucky. (See some photos).

Then I wondered: are there scholarships or grants for people who like science fiction? Or maybe also for science fiction writers? I decided to google this question and found some answers! The main answer is, YES, there are some interesting scholarship pages that are well worth a look.

Here they are:
The Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer's Workshop in UC San Diego - this workshop has financial assistance between $500.00 and $1500.00. The financial aid section is on the site page; just scroll down. There are many available.

The University of Kansas offers a scholarship for studying OR writing science fiction. Here is that page: http://www2.ku.edu/~sfcenter/SF-Scholarship.htm.

Here is a list of Science Fiction awards: http://www.sfawardswatch.com/?page_id=3. The most famous awards are here, including the Hugo.

St. Mary's University College in England has a part-time scholarship for Science Fiction and Cult Film and Television.

There is a Writers of the Future scholarship on the L. Ron Hubbard site.

I'll bet there are even more out there. That's great!

Scholarships, grants, and more links for Native Americans

This is the start of a bigger list of good scholarship links for Native Americans. I am putting free lists of scholarships, grants, and other good links here.

Later, I will put them on a separate page of this blog, if possible. The links with an asterix (*) in front of them are ones I personally have known of for a long time. You may find scholarship links here you may not find at other sites.

Checking with schools near you

Some pointers to get money for school by searching nearby

I have read a LOT of postings and blogs about getting scholarships in the last few years. Many bloggers and article writers suggest searching locally for scholarships and grants.

Why check locally?
Many lesser-known scholarships are ONLY offered at schools' advising offices. The available help includes scholarships and grants from local clubs and institutions. You never know... these could be really great.

How do I apply?
There is often a standard admission form at many schools; you get to ask whether you would like to be included in a scholarship or grant search. Your advisor may also ask you personally about your financial needs. You could wind up on the short list for this money.

Many schools will "package" their offers. You get to decide whether or not to accept this package, which may include scholarships, loans, and outright grants, if you are lucky.

Location, location, location...
I personally went to school locally. It was easy to commute. There were both online AND in-person classes to choose from.

Good luck on your scholarship and grant search!
