Scholarships: try all avenues, including the school you are interested in.

Hello, scholarship and grant hopefuls!
A signpost for getting money. From 401K (212) on Flickr.

A word of advice for today.

Besides checking out the scholarship sites online, be sure to check directly with your school to find private scholarships good only at your school.

These scholarships may not be advertised, and are available only if you are getting ready to attend a certain school. You must ask an advisor about them.

These kinds of scholarships are sometimes available for the arts (you try out or show a portfolio) or they can be needs-based (fill out an application and then you find out if you are eligible).

Sometimes local businesses offer scholarships and want the recipient to live locally or go to a local school.

So... ask! Get an appointment with an advisor or ask via email or a letter if you are attending online-online classes.

And good luck!

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance - it's worth a good look.

This website (the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance) contains 2,245 federal assistance programs that "include all Federal programs available to State and local governments."

Today is the first day I have seen this site. How interesting!

For my readers who want to find grants and scholarships, there is a search box on the upper right that I used to search for scholarships first. I used the word "scholarship" as my first search term. Then I put Guaranteed/Insured loans in the next box. Nothing.

Then I left the top blank and searched Training. I found a link for Native Americans to attend post-secondary schools. It tells the forms and application deadlines too.

Here is that page again:
The Catalog of Public Assistance.

I tried again, leaving the top blank and searching for Project Grants. Included here are some Graduate Fellowships, Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants, Secondary and Two-Year Postsecondary Agriculture Education Challenge Grants, and more.

Try it out! And let me know what you find.

Betsyanne

PS Thanks, imisidro on Yahoo, for your great answer to a Yahoo question here. You had this link in your answer, and I went to check it out. What a great suggestion. And I like how you explain about grants too. Readers, you will definitely want to check this page out too.

Could For-Profit Schools Lose Federal Aid?

The answer is yes.

Some students who have gone to for-profit schools COULD be in trouble. That is, if they keep having trouble paying their loans.

What MIGHT happen is that some for-profit schools could lose federal student aid. Period.

That is yet another reason to deeply think going to a for-profit school.

WHIO TV has an article online that explains more. Here it is: Feds: For-profits could lose federal student aid.

All schools are supposed to be training their students and helping them find jobs too. Some for-profit schools are not doing a really great job at that.

Find out more:

The Big List of Nursing Scholarship Links - Version Two

My Latest Nursing Scholarship Links. I added some this time.

The big, quality list of Nursing Scholarship Links (Version Two)

These scholarship information and help site links (below) are great free resources for students who want to go to nursing school or who are already in school and would like to find more funding.

I found many “new” scholarship pages just for nursing, but they had too many ads on them, or just emphasized online schools (which may have paid these sites for listing their schools).

These sites listed below are some of the best information sites and feature lots of links to help you find money for nursing schools across the country. They are free, nationally recognized, quality sites that have many links and help for people interested in going to nursing school. I hope you find them useful.

Do you have a favorite scholarship site you would like to see added to this list? Please list it in a comment and I will go there to check it out. Thanks!

Scholarships.com’s Nursing Scholarship page

The Official FAFSA site (which has scholarships in their database)

The Nursing Scholarship at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)

Undergraduate AND graduate nursing programs from CollegeScholarships.com.
There are also specialty links listed here to the left on the page.

The Michigan Center for Nursing Scholarship link page

Nursing Scholarships at the Fatomei site
http://scholarships.fatomei.com/scholarships-for-nurses.html

The American Legion has The Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship Fund. The description is here: "The Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship was established to assist registered nurses with advanced preparation for positions in supervision, administration or teaching. Students must have employment prospects in specific positions in hospitals, clinics or health departments upon completion of their education, and the position must have a full-time and direct relationship to pediatric lung and respiratory control."
http://www.legion.org/scholarships/nurse

Nursing School grant links from the Scholarships.org site
Also covered here are Federal, Minority, and State-Funded grants.

The Emergency Nurses Association awards scholarships too.
http://www.ena.org/foundation/scholarships/
Scroll to the bottom of this page and download their requirements.

The Johnson and Johnson page, Discover Nursing, features lots of information for nurses and nursing students.

Check out their Resources Page and also their Online Resources page for information about Financial Aid.

The D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) Nursing Scholarship

The NYS Nurses Scholarships Database
Included here is the National Database for Nursing Schools and Scholarships

Nursing Scholarships listed at the NOEDb (Nursing Online Education Database)

They also have this page: 101 Little Known Scholarships for Nurses
http://noedb.org/library/features/101-little-known-scholarships-for-nurses

The Student Nursing Grants and Scholarships site is worth a look too.
http://nursingschool.org/education/paying-for-school/scholarships/

State Nursing Scholarships: look on this page from the Nursing Scholarships site to find you state and some nursing scholarship links.
http://www.nursingscholarship.us/NursingScholarshipbyStates.html

Of course, looking at scholarships and grants for your particular area is always a great idea, as is filling out your FAFSA form at the official site.
Here is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Nursing Scholarship page: http://www.hrsa.gov/loanscholarships/scholarships/Nursing/.

And this looks very useful too: It is a list of the Top Ten Nursing Schools by the CNABoard.com site.

Good luck on your nursing school scholarship and career!

A link to a good article: "11 Steps to Raise Last-Minute Cash for College".

Here is a good article I ran across that you may like.

Right away, I saw that filling out your FAFSA form is listed as #1 on this list. So I know that this article is a good one.

Here is that link:
11 Steps to Raise Last-Minute Cash for College - US News and World Report.

I hope you like this article! It is from 2010, but the links are good ones. Some of the tips include applying for last-minute late-deadline scholarships (and a good article link about it), asking for a Professional Judgement Review from your college, and cutting costs by doing things like living at home or selling your car (ouch!).

Are you looking for money so you can attend school this Fall? Leave a comment at the end of this posting. Thanks!

There are many summer choices for nontraditional students

What are nontraditional students doing this summer? And what are YOU doing? (please leave a comment)

Summer Internships probably started in May or June, when regular school (trade school, college, or university) ended. These programs can be found online or sometimes can be found through word of mouth at school from other students, announcements, student papers, or teachers.

There are also some work-study programs that are either paid or unpaid. Some other programs require that students pay for their trip, and do projects for other countries or the U.S.

Still other nontraditional students work full or part-time during the summer, gearing up for Fall semester. And others are taking a well-deserved break.

Whatever you are doing this summer, nontrads, I hope it's a wonderful summer for everyone.

Nontraditionally yours,
