Welcome to this blog, Nontraditional Students!

I wrote about this blog today on my Nontraditional Student blog

Students on computers. From garryknight on Flickr.

As you probably already know, a nontraditional student is a student who is going back to school after a break.

There are many opportunities today for nontrads to obtain scholarships. Often, "regular" scholarships and sites also have scholarships for nontraditional students available.

Just go to the Search area here and search for the kind of scholarship you want, to see other postings too. (the box is at the right side, near the top.)

And here are some postings to help nontraditional students and others get started on their scholarship search.

Fastweb: This free site is one of the BEST scholarship search sites on the internet.

The Fatomei Site also has some awesome links to free money. Of course, there are scholarships here, but there are also links to internship possibilities, graduate school money, fellowships, and lots more. Scroll down to see these.

And here are the five MOST POPULAR postings here on the site.

The Dr. Torres Database - good for a close look. It has many different categories.

How to read and navigate the Torres/Fatomei database.

On the surface, the Dr. Torres/Fatomei database doesn't seem to have a lot to it. BUT it has been online for a long time, and has some very useful links in it that other websites don't have.

The title when you get to the site, High School Seniors: College Scholarships, Student Financial Aid, describes the page well. You need to scroll down past the ads then, to see the quality links below them.

For me, since I am not a high school senior, the links at the right side of the site are much more interesting. Some of these include African Americans, Minorities, Native Americans, Women, Arts and Humanities, College and Graduate School, Medical School, and Nationally Coveted, just to name a few.

Just click on these categories to see what is listed there. Here is a screen shot of the site to help you see the different areas.

The right side links are easy to see, and have grey shading.

You can also see the Google ads there. When you scroll down past them, you will see K-12, College Scholarships, etc. Below this are the actual Dr. Torres links.

This site is a treasure trove of many kinds of scholarships, grants, awards, fellowships, and internships. I like the way everything is available for you to see and how it is classified. It is very up-front and easy to read too.

Let me know what you find by leaving a comment.

The three most popular postings this week on the Find Scholarships and Grants site

The Top Three Find Scholarships and Grants postings for this week are:

#1: Scholarships, Grants, and more links for Native Americans
This list includes the Online Education Database (Oedb) and the Fatomei site. The Fatomei site is one I discovered years ago. It is not on many lists, but it's a treasure trove of information, including graduate scholarships, which seem so far to be a bit harder to find.

#2: Finding Scholarships only your school offers
There is much to be said about the personal touch, even today, in the age of computers and online searching for everything. If it's at all possible for you, consider going in person to nearby colleges, universities, or schools you think you might be interested. Ask to see an advisor. Often, these advisors will know about scholarships and grants only offered through that school. It's worth a shot.

#3. Veterinary School Scholarships
Is it your dream to help animals? Whether it's working with small pets, or perhaps researching with dolphins or taking care of big cats in a zoo, veterinary school can open doors for you. This list of scholarships includes some top schools (such as Oregon, the University of Wisconsin and Texas A & M) and  also some other opportunities, such as being a Vet Assistant.

Later!

About Native American Scholarships

I found a great article on the College Scholarships site today. It explains that in order to qualify for a Native American Scholarshp, an applicant must prove tribal membership with a CIB (Certificate of Indian Blood). This makes sense. You must also belong to a tribe that is federally recognized, the article explains.

But how to do this if you do not already have what you need? You may have to find out information from older relatives, and do some genealogy work. There are some good resources listed here to help you in your search. There is more and more information listed online today than ever before, so hopefully you will find pointers and help in order to do the work yourself and save money. Of course, if you do not have time, or just would rather somebody else did the work, there are professional genealogists that can help you, for a fee.

Once you find your tribal heritage, and have the documentation you need (birth and death records, for instance) you may need to fill out some paperwork and work with the tribe itself in order to document your family history and get your official papers that you need.

Then you will be able to send in your applications for Native American scholarships.
