Some good Athletic Scholarship links (version A)

Athletic Scholarships in the U.S.

Are you considering applying for a athletic scholarship? You may already have been told by others that you should. And it doesn’t hurt to find out.

Have you checked with the schools you most are interested in? That would be a good first step. But you will also need some good links to explore. Just scroll down to find those.

Here is something I ran across today that I didn’t know. It is from Wikipedia: “An athletic scholarship is a form of scholarship to attend university awarded to an individual based predominantly on his or her ability to play in a sport. Athletic scholarships are common in the United States, but in many countries they are rare or non-existent.”

I didn’t know that!

Here are some quality sites to get you started on a search to find out more about athletic scholarships:

The College Scholarships.org page on Athletic Scholarships
This site provides advice too, not just links.

The FinAid page on Sports Scholarships

The Scholarships.com Athletic Scholarships page
There are some good links here after the article.

Loyola Scholarships (New Orleans, LA)

Do you have some favorite links? List them as a comment. Good luck!

Want to study in England? Apply for a Marshall scholarship - plus more scholarships

Hi, readers!

This clipart is from Clker.com

Have you ever dreamed of going to school in another country?

I ran across an article about studying in England today on the Princeton University site. They are current and former Princeton students. However, this scholarship is available to students from all over. It is available for two years at any British University, for any field of study.

I have to say, this appeals to me so much. What a great opportunity! Studying in England would be a dream come true for me, and would also have been earlier in my life.

There is a long history to this scholarship. As the Princeton site explains,  the Marshall Scholarship was set up "in 1953 as a British gesture to the United States for the assistance received after World War II under the Marshall Plan."

Scholarships and Grants for Nontraditional Students

Hi all! Today I am shining my spotlight on scholarships and grants in the U.S. for nontraditional students. These students are going back to school after a break. I am personally interested in nontrads because I was one several years ago. I took education classes. Now I have a blog, a website, a Yahoo group, a Facebook page, and a Twitter page just for Nontraditional Students.

It can be harder for nontraditional students to find scholarship opportunities, but more and more schools are jumping on the bandwagon to help these students, who often commute, have families, or other responsibilities. So maybe you will find it easier to find financial aid than in years past.

Here are some good sources to find scholarships and grants for nontraditional students. I am also starting to list some on the Nontrad pages too. If you know of a good scholarship or grant for nontraditional students, please feel free to add it to the State Pages at the Nontrad site or list it as a comment here.

You can also search for nontraditional student scholarships on your state college, GED, or trade school pages. Just go to the site and put the words "nontraditional student scholarship" in the search box once you are on the site you want.

Here are just a few scholarships out of the many that are offered today:

FAFSA deadlines - do you know them?

About FAFSA Deadlines

I just went to the official FAFSA website to check into deadlines. They have a drop-down menu where you can put your state.

Here is that link: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm.

I checked my state (Kentucky) and put down what term I was interested in. I found out that June 30th was the deadline for filling out my FAFSA form.

That doesn't leave much time, and may be even less for other states. So if you are wanting a scholarship, loan, or grant (or in-school job) you will want to fill out your FAFSA soon.

Another place to find out more about the FAFSA and how to fill it out is at the Nontrad Scholarship Page one. I have a new video there that explains more tips. Here is that link: http://www.nontradstudents.com/scholarships.html (the scholarship video is on the right side, top.)

And of course, here is the official FAFSA site link again: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Good luck in your scholarship search!

Are there scholarships out there to help get a GED?

First off, GED students seem to have a harder time locating help.

It seems that most scholarship links online point to help for college students, not for people who want to get their GED.

But I did find some help and at least one scholarship for GED students - one is in Kentucky and the other in Oregon. Just scroll down for these links and more.

I hoped to find more scholarships out there just for GED students. Maybe they are out there. If you now of one, please list it below as a comment.

With or without a scholarship, though, I know that students are wanting to get their GED, and will be trying hard to get it, whether or not they need to spend money to do it or not.

These can be students going back to school after a break, or students who for one reason or another need to complete requirements to get their GED. GED stands for General Equivalency Diploma. What is also great is that colleges are accepting these diplomas more than ever, especially with the rise of homeschooling.

Luckily, you probably will not need a scholarship to go to a GED class or take GED courses online or with the help of classes on TV, because states want their people to have a high school diploma. Students with a GED diploma can go on to college, or get better jobs.

But some colleges do offer scholarships later on, for students who want to go to college. These scholarships are just for students with a GED. So it's in the student's best interest to go ahead and get their GED in many ways.

Here are some links to help students get their GED:

Getting your GED – some sites to help

Here is the official GED testing site page/

Preparing for the GED test – the official page
This page helps you find the local GED center for your state, and explains the steps you need to take to get your GED.

Preparing for your GED at home: here is the official page which also lists resources you can use, like GED on TV and also accommodations for disabilities.

Take sample tests online:

And here are some other pages you may find helpful:

GED Stories – actually stories of other GED students who are going back to get their GED credential. You also get to comment on these stories and give these students a pat on the back or encouragement.

The Portland Literary Council GED Test Scholarship Fund
http://www.portlandliteracy.org/ged.html You must live in Multnomah, Washington, or Clackamas counties in Oregon.

The GED pages from About.com have lots of information about getting a GED. Click on the information for your state to find out what they offer.

GED information by state from the DiplomaGuide.com site

Kentucky is offering free GED testing right now

Adult High School Completion Programs – from the Fairfax County Public Schools site (Virginia)

Arizona Adult Education Links from the Pima County Public Library
These look helpful for all GED students.

The three most popular postings this week on the Find Scholarships and Grants site

The Top Three Find Scholarships and Grants postings for this week are:

#1: Scholarships, Grants, and more links for Native Americans
This list includes the Online Education Database (Oedb) and the Fatomei site. The Fatomei site is one I discovered years ago. It is not on many lists, but it's a treasure trove of information, including graduate scholarships, which seem so far to be a bit harder to find.

#2: Finding Scholarships only your school offers
There is much to be said about the personal touch, even today, in the age of computers and online searching for everything. If it's at all possible for you, consider going in person to nearby colleges, universities, or schools you think you might be interested. Ask to see an advisor. Often, these advisors will know about scholarships and grants only offered through that school. It's worth a shot.

#3. Veterinary School Scholarships
Is it your dream to help animals? Whether it's working with small pets, or perhaps researching with dolphins or taking care of big cats in a zoo, veterinary school can open doors for you. This list of scholarships includes some top schools (such as Oregon, the University of Wisconsin and Texas A & M) and  also some other opportunities, such as being a Vet Assistant.

Later!

Government Grants, Loans, and websites - from EHow

A video about Government websites and help

This is a surprisingly good video that gives some websites, info. on housing, applying for free grants, loans for small business, housing, education, disaster relief, scholarship info., phone numbers, and other information.

It is by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. The Title is "Debt Relief and Management Tips: How to Apply for Free Government Grants, Loans and Scholarships."

The speaker, Maria Anamoto, (Or Marie Anne Amoto) has a bit of an accent, but I could understand her just fine.

Some sites mentioned in this video are Govloans.gov, studentaid.gov, and more. It is by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. I hope you like it!

Don't get ripped off trying to find a scholarship... some pointers

Yes, you can get a scholarship. NO, you should NOT have to pay for one!
Now... give me some money!
Some sites will tell you have DO have to pay to get a scholarship. This is just one kind of scholarship scam. There are also scams by so-called "consultants", and promises of a guaranteed scholarship. Don't be fooled by a fake scholarship scam.

This advice especially goes for the Official FAFSA site - - some people are trying to get money from FAFSA applicants by offering their services to get scholarships or loans for students. Don't be fooled. The Official FAFSA site is totally FREE and you can do it yourself.

You can look up "apply for your FAFSA" and get the completely wrong website. It might LOOK right but it isn't. The real FAFSA site is the government site, and has many scholarships there that an be offered to you along with low-rate loans. This is what the official (real) FAFSA site looks like: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Here is a page at the Nontrad website that has a FAFSA Filing hints video too, if you are filling out your FAFSA.

Be a detective!

Moving right along, an article at the FinAid site explains that there ARE scholarship scams out there, and that you need to be aware of them. Some scam sites actually "guarantee" you a scholarship, when there actually is no such thing as a guarantee of getting one. You have to be chosen and go through a vetting process for most REAL scholarships.

This article helps you evaluate different websites and consultants out there too, and how to "investigate suspicious offers." Be on the safe side - if a scholarship offer seems bogus, it very well may be.
Catching Scholarship $

Good luck on your scholarship search!

Internships and summer jobs - have you applied for one?

About Internships... (and summer jobs)

I didn't know much about internships until I was back in school. I was taking a journalism class, and found out about some great internships that were offered through the Journalism Department at WKU.

For those who are not in the know, Internships are largely unpaid opportunities to work in business or a nonprofit and get good recommendations, job experience, and references.

Often, students will intern in the summertime and go to school during the regular school year.

An internship is NOT a scholarship or a grant, but can be just as competitive. It is an opportunity to find out more about a subject, and to make contacts too.

How to get one? Simply ask your school departments OR teachers about them. You can also look up internships from a book or online.

Following are just a few helpful pages and links about internships.

Learning a lot. From the Microsoft Clipart pages.

The Fatomei Internship page
InternZoo - has ads for intern jobs.
The White House internship (apply in May)
NPR Internships
Mercy Corps internship in International Development (also learning about International relief and development).
Monster College List of Internships
New England Aquarium Internships
The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center internships
Internship opportunities by AAAnet (American Anthropological Assn.)
The Michigan University State Libraries list of internships - this site warns you against paying for information or hiring a firm to place you. You can do this all for free yourself.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Internship (The application for 2012-13 is available in the Fall of 2011.)
Internships at the Smithsonian (applications are now online)
The CoolWorks site: It looks like employers pay for their ads, you as a job seeker, do not. There are jobs here at nonprofits that may qualify as an internship. Check it out.

Have a favorite site to add? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks!
